Bishoujo Senshi Sailormoon R (Jpn) - 美少女戦士セーラームーンR
The second season of the Sailor Moon anime series, titled Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon R (美少女戦士セーラームーンR, Bishōjo Senshi Sērā Mūn Āru), was produced by Toei Animation and directed by Junichi Sato and Kunihiko Ikuhara. The season began broadcasting on TV Asahi between March 6, 1993 and ended on March 12, 1994, lasting 43 episodes. According to the booklet from the Sailor Moon Memorial Song Box, the letter "R" stands for Romance.
Production for this season took place concurrently with that of the second story-arc (Black Moon) of the manga by Naoko Takeuchi, closely following the story of the manga. Sailor Moon was originally intended by Takeuchi to run only one season, but the first became so popular that Toei asked Takeuchi to keep drawing her manga. At first, she struggled with developing another storyline to extend the series due to the sudden request of Toei Animation. The basic idea of the second season, introducing the daughter of Usagi Tsukino/Sailor Moon from the future, came from her editor, Fumio Osano.
Because the production of both manga and anime occurred at the same time, Sailor Moon R begins with a 13 episode long sub-arc that does not exist in the manga, created to give Naoko Takeuchi time to catch up. This story features the Sailor Senshi regaining their memories, which they lost after defeating the Dark Kingdom when they were revived, and encounter the Makaiju aliens. This first arc is known as the 'Makaiju' arc ('Doom Tree' in the English dub by DiC Entertainment). The main story arc, which is featured in the manga, explores the future of all the Senshi in a city made of crystal called Crystal Tokyo, ruled over by Neo-Queen Serenity and King Endymion. New characters were introduced including Chibiusa, Sailor Pluto, and (in the manga) Diana. The Black Moon Clan, led by Prince Demando and his advisor, the Wiseman, function as the primary villains.
The English dub, produced by DiC Entertainment, included an educational segment called "Sailor Says", at the end of each episode — to teach a moral based on the story shown in the episode. In its first airing, the English Sailor Moon series consisted of just 65 episodes, 40 of them taken from the first season. The company eventually produced 82 episodes, completing the first and second season. The first 12 completed episodes of the Chibiusa/Black Moon arc were shown first after airing the Makaiju Arc. The remaining 17 episodes of the Black Moon arc were not released for another three years, labeled by Cartoon Network as "the lost episodes". There was a campaign called 'SOS' which means 'Save Our Sailors' organized by many American Sailor Moon fans. Many fans signed a petition asking DiC Entertainment to continue their effort to release the final episodes. Many poptarts were sold as a result of the campaign to raise money. When the remaining 17 episodes were finally released it was allowed for Pioneer to get access to the Sailor Moon copyrights to dub the third and fourth season, Sailor Moon S and Sailor Moon Super S.
One of the episodes from the second season, about Usagi, Rei, Minako, Makoto and Ami relaxing on an island during their holidays involving Chibiusa's friendship with a dinosaur (episode 67 Japanese version), was not dubbed by DiC and was never shown in the English dub.
In the 1994 "favorite episode" polls for Animage, "Protect Chibiusa! Clash of the 10 Warriors" came in eighth place. The following year, "The Final Battle Between Light and Darkness! Love Sworn to the Future" came in seventh place.
The arc used "Moonlight Densetsu" as its opening theme music, with an ending theme of "Otome no Policy" ("Maiden's Policy"), performed by Yoko Ishida. There were 2 versions of the opening, the first having more about the main story, the second more closely following and representing the story of the R season, as it features Crystal Tokyo, Neo-Queen Serenity, King Endymion, Chibi-Usa, Sailor Pluto, and the Black Moon Family.
The English DVD set bears the name "Sailor Moon - Season Two" instead of "Sailor Moon R".

New characters
The Makaiju is a minor group of villains featured in the first 13 episodes of Sailor Moon R (episode 47 - 59 Japanese Version). They only appeared in the anime. In these episodes, Usagi Tsukino and her friends are reborn on Earth, after defeating the Dark Kingdom, which caused their memories of their lives as the Sailor Senshi to disappear. Two new transfer students, Seijuro Ginga and Natsumi Ginga, join Usagi's class at Juuban Junior high school. Around the same time, two new enemies appear, calling themselves Eiru and An. They had wandered around space alone for many years before reaching Earth, where they finally find energy to collect for the "Makaiju" (Hell Tree) so that they can revive it and give them energy to survive. To do this, they drain the life energy of humans by using monster named 'Cardians'. Seeing that there's no other choice, Luna reawakens Sailor Moon and the rest of the Sailor Senshi to fight these enemies and protect the Earth.
Though the events were never referred to in later episodes, the alien Fiore who appears in the Sailor Moon R movie bears a strong resemblance to Eiru and An's race.
They are the only two of their kind, and could be considered as siblings as well as romantic partners since they were both born from the Makaiju so it wouldn't be lonely on a planet with ocean anymore. This was reavealed in the last episode of the Makaiju Arc, episode 59 of the Japanese Version.
Ail (エイル, Eiru, written Ali in the ADV release) takes on the persona of Seijūrō Ginga (銀河 星十郎, Ginga Seijūrō) and lives with his "sister" in Jūban Odyssey Apartments. While trying to blend in with the humans at Usagi's school, Al develops the role of brother to his girlfriend, Ann. He develops a crush on Usagi, and constantly tries to win her over, much to the dislike of Ann (and of Mamoru). He constantly denies these feelings to Ann, knowing her to have fits of jealous rage. Eiru uses his flute to summon Cardians, allowing An to select which one he will summon. His name is Alan Granger in the English dub.
In his given name, Seijūrō, the first kanji (sei) means "star", the second (juu) means "ten", and the last (rou) is a counter for sons. Thus, his name means something like "Tenth Son of the Stars." The kanji for his family name, Ginga, means "galaxy".
Hikaru Midorikawa voiced Eiru; he also voiced Fiore in the Sailor Moon R: The Movie. In the English dub, he is voiced by Vince Corazza, who also does the third voice for Tuxedo Mask.
En (アン, An, written En in the ADV release) takes on the human identity of Natsumi Ginga (銀河 夏美, Ginga Natsumi) and lives with her "brother" in the Juuban Odyssey Apartments. She develops a crush on Mamoru, and constantly tries to win him over, much to Eiru's and Usagi's dislike. Her name written as Anne Granger in the dub version.
In her given name, Natsumi, the first kanji (natsu) means "summer", and the second (mi) means "beauty." The kanji for her family name, Ginga, means "galaxy."

The Makaiju (魔界樹, Hell Tree), itself is an alien tree that nourishes Eiru and An, but it became weak and required energy to stay alive. For some time they supplied it with human energy to revive but eventually it stopped working. In the English dub and subtitles, it's commonly referred to as the Doom Tree.
In the final episode of the story arc, the aliens try to give Usagi to it as an offering, because Usagi's energy that the Makaiju stole when caused a sapling to grow on the tree. The tree becomes angered and starts to injure those around it, killing An in the process. It did not stop until its alien children realized what love is. The tree tells its story to Sailor Moon. The tree once lived alone on a faraway planet on an island in a vast ocean for countless years until it began to create life (the English dub changed the story to suggest it was once called "The Tree of Live" and that it created life). It gave energy to its children, but eventually they became greedy and began to fight over the power (The English dub, however, changed the tale by claiming that "evil forces" were responsible for corrupting its children). When the fighting destroyed the planet, the tree fled into space with several survivors, but they struggled to survive and in the end, there were only two small children left, Eiru and An. It was now weak and needed the energy of love to survive. Sailor Moon uses her power to purify the tree, and it disappears. When Eiru and An reunite, a small sapling appears to them; the tree has been reborn and they are given a chance to start over, and they leave Earth to live a better live with the Makaiju.
The Makaiju was voiced in Japanese by Taeko Nakanishi. In the English dub (DiC), it was voiced by Elizabeth Hannah.
The Cardians are monsters that are used by two aliens Eiru (Seijuro Ginga) and An (Natsumi Ginga) in the anime (the Makaiju Arc didn't exist in the manga). Their mission is to obtain energy to revive the Makaiju (Hell Tree) by using the cardians. . They are kept in cards until they are summoned by Eiru. To summon them, Eiru would hold up several cards, and An would pick one. The card would then rise into the air and Eiru would play a tune on his flute which causes the Cardian to come alive. When a Cardian is destroyed, it changes back into its card form and the picture of the cardian on the card turns black after a few seconds.
The English dub by Dic changed the names of the aliens due to pronunciation just like they changed many other names of the characters. Eiru's name was changed to Alan and An's name was changed to Ann in both alien as human form. The Makaiju's name was changed to Doom Tree. The Original Japanese dub and the English dub each used a different version of Eiru/Alan's flute melody.
