Jurassic Park - Rampage Edition (Euro, USA)

Sega Megadrive 1994 Sega
Jurassic Park: Rampage Edition is a side-scroller released in 1994 by Sega for the Sega Mega Drive System and for its American equivalent, the Sega Genesis. It is the sequel to the popular game Jurassic Park.

Like its predecessor, Rampage Edition is an action game with a platform setup. The game allows the player to choose between Dr. Grant or the Velociraptor. If you choose to play as Dr. Grant you start at the crash site of the helicopter that you used to escape at the end of the first game. By default you start out with a dart gun that has infinite ammo but there is a wide selection of weapons available for the player to obtain throughout the game. The variety of weapons in the game include a machine gun, shotgun, flame-thrower, grenades, rocket launcher, and shock rifle. As Dr. Grant you travel through fighting military type men, possibly private InGen protection, and dinosaurs until you are able to escape the island by boat.

If the player decides to play as the Velociraptor you win battles with physical attacks such as biting and whipping your tail. An interesting bonus for the Velociraptor or Raptor is if you collect enough Lysine Cases you are able to go into "Rampage Mode" where the screen turns red and you become invincible for a limited amount of time. As the Velociraptor you play all the same levels as Dr. Grant allowing you to escape the island by hiding on a cargo boat.

Instead of the linear gameplay of the previous game, Rampage Edition allowed players to choose from three levels to complete before they were allowed to proceed to the final levels in order to win the game.

Levels

Aviary This level takes place inside a giant birdcage of sorts. Grant must escape from a Pteranodon's nest and avoid being caught by the winged creatures. The Raptor on the other hand must make its way through the trees to reach the other side of the stage.

Savannah The Savannah is a flat, almost desert-like area. Both Grant and the Raptor must cross a long stretch of land avoiding other dinosaurs and agents. The most lethal enemy in this level is the helicopter which will appear at certain points. Trying to outrun the helicopter is almost certain death, so your best option is to fight it. Playing as Grant also gives you the option to progress through the stage while riding on the back of a Gallimimus.

Cargo Ship This is one of the three primary levels for Grant, while it is the final level for the Raptor. Besides dinosaurs, electrified water can be found on the ship which will cause damage. As Grant, the final leg of this level involves escaping a flooding cargo hold. The Raptor, however, will face a red version of itself, presumably another Raptor who also intends to escape the island. This is the closest element to a boss fight in this game.

Hidden Ruins This is one of the primary levels for the raptor, but one of the final stages for Grant. It is set in a jungle environment and a series of ancient ruins. The level is very much the same for both Grant and the Raptor, except Grant will need to ride the Triceratops to escape.

Raptor Rapids One of the final levels for both Grant and the Raptor, Grant must steer his boat down the river, while the Raptor runs along the river's elaborate pipe system. As Grant proceeds, the environment changes, growing cold and blue, to almost toxic, until finally, the river almost appears to be on fire.

Burning River This is Grant's final stage, and as expected, one of the hardest. Grant must evade the deadly T. Rex while trying to steer his boat down a final expanse of water. You can't outrun the T. Rex, but you can shoot it to stun it momentarily. This process must be repeated until Grant reaches the end of the level. There are no power ups in this level, so it's best to enter heavily armed.
